about a pomegranate hedge

I have a sunny patch in my yard where I want to put a long pomegranate hedge but the area is only 4 ft between my house and a fence. Can a pomegranate hedge with the "wonderful" variety be pruned to only be 2 ft wide?

Hi, Rosie --

I'm having some trouble picturing this ... a diagram of what you want to do might help.

But yes, pomegranates can be pruned to that width, or you might consider using espalier to put the pomegranates on the fence itself.

(you can read more about this on my page about trees)

The main issue you will have with pruning pomegranates is their thorns, which are up to an inch (2.5 cm) long.

If you want to have a space between the hedge and the wall, make sure that you design a way to get behind the trees safely to be able to prune and harvest them, without getting scratched.
