February in Los Osos
by Lynn Sterner
I challenged my son Daniel (17) to help me create a meal using only ingredients from the front garden, and eggs from my chickens. We made potato cakes, a salad, stir fry vegetables, and tea.
Potato cakes: Potatoes, Eggs, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, Savory, Parsley
Stir fry vegetables: Snap peas, Beet greens, Onion*, garlic*, Soy sauce, Mirin, Pepper
Salad:Beet greens, Parsley, Savory, Nasturtium leaves,
Nasturtium flowers, Calendula petals, Lettuce*
Tea: Mint, Rosemary, Savory
*Not from the front garden, I do have onions and garlic but not ready to harvest, and we added a little organic store bought lettuce to our salad to stretch it out.
Everything was delicious. Everyone especially enjoyed the tea, mint with just a touch of the rosemary and thyme. The garden has not changed much from January, though it is growing well after a light rain and warm weather. The poppies and Nasturtiums are beginning to bloom. In the background of one of the photos you can see the rain barrels and rain tank that I use to water the garden. We are hoping to receive at least one more good rain to fill the tanks back up. It takes a least and inch of rain falling in a short amount of time to fill them up.
